Day 22 - July 1st

Travelled from Delani, Alaska to Fairbanks, Alaska.
Happy Canada Day from Alaska!! It is nice and sunny with temp of 84’C. Apparently this is around the highest temp they get in this area. This has been the warmest day we have had since we left on June 10th. It was nice to not have my heated jacket on.We went to the Ice Sculpture Museum and saw some great sculptures. We watched an artist carve a dove on a branch from ice. Very interesting to see this done. We then separated from the group and headed to the visitor cultural center then off to the Eldorado Gold Mine. Here we took a little train ride inside a gold shaft where they explained different minerals and saw some old bones found in the earth during mining expeditions. On the way out of the shaft we saw a demonstration of how they got dirt and permafrost out of the ground, known as “drift mining”. We actually struck gold for a whooping $20 - wow!! LOL. We are rich!! Our B&B is awesome! We have the entire upstairs of a home with leather couches and a river running in the back yard. There is beaver dam right outside the back of the house that apparently has babies but we never did see any. We saved the very special bedroom for Will and Andrea who are not here yet as they headed to the hot springs. We told our hosts that they are on their honeymoon!!! LOL... actually they have been married for 17 years, so although not newly weds they have been married the shortest amount of time compared to the rest of us! The room has mirrors on the ceiling above the bed!! I know they will get quite a kick out of this room!! We are heading off for supper at a place called the Great Salmon Bake which is quite popular in Alaska. It ended up being quite the place if you like fish and beef. Lots of food and all you can eat. For me, I had a $30 salad since I don‘t like fish or beef, but, everyone else really liked it and certainly got their money‘s worth of food.
Tomorrow morning we have to be up around 5am to catch a bus at 0600 to take us up to the Arctic Circle! We are all looking so forward to this, but it will be a 16hr bus ride, so we will all be pretty exhausted when we get home! It is hard to believe we have now started out 3rd week and half way through our trip. From here on we are still doing the tourist thing, however our direction for travel is “back to home”. I would love to come back here, not to live, but to visit. There is so much we have not been able to do, so much to see and we would never get tired of seeing the mountains.
