Day 27 - July 6th

Travelled from Whitehorse, Yukon to Watson Lake , British Columbia
Today is Pat’s birthday!!!
Whitehorse is known as “The Wilderness City” due to the spectacular surroundings. It was originally a stopover for stampeders heading down river to the Klondike during the gold rush of 1898.

This morning we met with the MP of Whitehorse, Larry Bagnell who is a relative of one of Pat and Al’s friends. Larry was kind enough to take us to Schwapka Lake, Myles Cannon and the foot bridge over the Yukon River. We then toured the SS Klondike museum and found it very informative. This steam ship transported supplies and people up and down the Yukon River mainly during the gold rush. Once the white pass train was finished people stopped using the river for transportation. It definitely tied together the gold rush and the way of living/travelling back in those days. We then headed to Watson Creek and stopped at Johnson's Crossing (Johnson just happens to be Al and Pat's last name!) which is known around here for their yummy cinnamon buns, and yes they lived up to their reputation!!. After a quick supper in Watson Creek we visited the Northern Lights Centre. Here we watched a documentation on the Northern Lights and another on Space which was very interesting. We stayed tonight at an old air force bunker house that was renovated into rooms . Interesting place where we had to share bathrooms with unknown people! It reminded me of when I lived in nurses residence The final picture of the day was taken when Grant was leading the group and I put the camera behind my helmut and snapped. Pretty awesome photo
